Dry Goods Conditioning

Conditioning

Effective conditioning dramatically improves extract efficiency. The selection of the correct conditioning system is key, given the selection of milling system and mash separation method.

The Darcy equation is the key to understanding Lauter Tun design. We want bigger husk
fractions for the Lauter bed, but finer flour to access the starchy Endosperm.

Effective conditioning allows a finer grind because hydration swells and ‘binds’ the husk fraction, allowing tighter roll setting whilst maintaining the effectiveness of the filter bed.
